Oxon Cove Clean-Up w/ Ward 8 Woods & Wake the 8 (Paddling OPTIONAL!)

November 20 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Join Potomac Riverkeeper Network, Ward 8 Woods, and Wake the 8 for a river clean up at Oxon Cove! A great amount of trash flows into Oxon Cove from the rest of the Potomac Watershed, and one of our long term goals is to work to mitigate the flow of trash from Oxon Run into the Potomac. Come out, bring a friend, and spend a couple of hours cleaning up with us!

Prior to the cleanup event, VA Master Naturalist, Ajani Simmons, will lead us on a plant ID walk in the park, and Ed Hardy of Wake the 8 will be leading us in a stretching circle to help us prepare to get active!

What to Bring

We will have volunteers in their personal kayaks cleaning from the river ahead of the land-based portion of the cleanup, and some people will be along the water in waders and heavy boots. For those on foot – it should be noted that there is about a mile hike down to the cove. Boots, long pants, water bottles, sunscreen, bug repellant, and tetanus shots are strongly encouraged. Hip waders are a plus!

We will provide grabbers, gloves, hand sanitizer, trash bags and information about the Potomac River. A larger PRKN boat will be at the cove with safety supplies and a hydration station.

Parking Info

The day of, please park in the Oxon Cove Park & Oxon Hill Farm parking lot. From there, we will shuttle down to the cove.

Note: All parties interested in being part of the kayaking component of the event – please reach out to Bill Szymanski, captain of the Trash-Free Boat Brigade, at as logistics will differ slightly. Kayakers will be required to bring their own boat to the event, and have modified parking instructions.
