With the holiday season in full swing, I’m reminded of the crowded dinner tables filled with loved ones, joyful laughter, and delicious food that make this time of year my favorite. These gatherings, among my happiest memories, inspire my passion for environmental conservation. Protecting the natural resources that sustain these moments is at the heart of my advocacy.

At UC San Diego, I studied “Anthropology: Climate Change and Human Solutions”, which helped me understand the connections between food, climate change, and public health. A class fishing trip to San Diego Bay, an industrial and naval harbor, drove me to research bioaccumulative toxins caused by industrialization. I uncovered the dangers these pollutants pose to marine life and anglers who consume their catches. I saw how clean water, public health, and sustainable ecosystems are deeply interconnected.

My interest in sustainable food systems and environmental safety led me to an internship at King Family Vineyards in Virginia, where I gained hands-on experience with pesticide regulation, irrigation management, and regenerative agriculture. Witnessing decisions about water runoff and land use deepened my understanding of the fragile relationship between food production and the environment.

While exploring the various avenues to advance my passion for environmental justice, a mentor introduced me to PRKN. Inspired by PRKN’s mission to protect public health and the natural resources, I felt compelled to join. Learning about collaborations with cost-share program partner organizations and engaging in outreach initiatives has deepened my appreciation for the organization’s interdisciplinary approach to making a true difference. I am proud to be part of this dedicated community of changemakers.

This holiday season, as I share a meal with loved ones, I am deeply grateful for environmental advocates who work tirelessly to ensure our food is safe, sustainable, and nourishing—not just for us but for the planet we call home. Their dedication inspires me to pursue a legal career focused on environmental protection, where I can advocate for sustainable land use and clean water to help build resilient food systems for future generations.
