SUMMARY:Water Wednesday: Musseling Our Way to A Healthier Potomac
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Ashley Flores\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin Potomac Riverkeeper Network on July 8th from 12 – 1 pm as we dive into the fascinating world of freshwater mussels! These remarkable creatures act as nature’s water filters\, improving water quality\, supporting biodiversity\, and strengthening river ecosystems. Did you know: just one freshwater mussel can filter up to 15 gallons in a single day?! \n\n\n\nHear from Dr. Jess Jones of Virginia Tech and PRKN Staff Scientist\, Evan Quinter as they explore the vital role mussels play in restoring our waterways and discuss ongoing efforts to bring millions of these transformative bivalves back to the Potomac and Shenandoah watersheds. \n\n\n\nAs always\, we will save time toward the end of the webinar for a Q&A session! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWednesday\, July 8\, 202612 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nFREE Zoom Webinar \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:PFAS & Biosolids: Northern Neck Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Jan Kopřiva from Pexels\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Potomac Riverkeeper Network and Friends of the Rappahannock for a presentation with Maine Representative Bill Pluecker on PFAS and Biosolids. \n\n\n\nRepresentative Bill Pluecker is an organic farmer and a leader in PFAS & Biosolids legislation in Maine. A brief presentation will be followed by an audience Q&A. \n\n\n\n\n\nBiosolids\, the treated sewage sludge produced by wastewater treatment plants\, are applied to farmland across the country. Farmers use biosolids because they’re cheaper than traditional fertilizer and are marketed as safe and sustainable. What farmers aren’t told is that biosolids can contain harmful levels of PFAS\, a “Forever Chemical” that is toxic to humans and can migrate from soil into crops\, rivers and well water. \n\n\n\nDuring this presentation we will discuss how PFAS enter the environment\, why biosolids are a growing concern nationwide\, and what farmers\, landowners\, and residents have a right to know about biosolids and the “forever chemicals” in them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\nLOCATIONRappahannock Community College – Warsaw Lecture Hall52 Campus Drive Warsaw\, VA 22572 \n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION NOT REQUIRED

SUMMARY:Explorations with Your Riverkeeper: Shenandoah Snorkeling Paddle w/ Shenandoah Riverkeeper
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReady to see the Shenandoah River from a whole new perspective? Join Shenandoah Riverkeeper Mark Frondorf for an unforgettable paddle-and-snorkel adventure on the beautiful South Fork of the Shenandoah River. \n\n\n\nThis isn’t your typical float trip. We’ll paddle a scenic stretch of river with plenty of stops to slip into the water\, mask up\, and explore what’s happening beneath the surface. The Shenandoah is full of surprises\, and snorkeling reveals an entire hidden world of fish\, aquatic life\, and river-bottom habitats that most people never get to see. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdding to the adventure\, we’ll be joined by Mike Selckmann\, Associate Director for Aquatic Habitats at the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB). Mike will help us uncover the fascinating story of freshwater mussels—one of the river’s most important and most overlooked creatures. \n\n\n\nThese remarkable animals are natural water filters\, with a single mussel capable of filtering 5-15 gallons of water every day. Historically\, healthy mussel beds helped keep the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers clean and thriving. Today\, however\, robust mussel populations on the Shenandoah are rare. But efforts are underway to turn that around. \n\n\n\nWhere did all the mussels go? Mercury contamination? Increased sediment? Rising water temperatures? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMike Selckmann of ICPRB talks about the mighty mussel to snorkeling attendees while SRK Mark Frondorf listens intently in the background. Photo Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThose are exactly the kinds of questions we’ll explore together as we snorkel\, observe\, and learn about the challenges—and hope—for restoring this critical part of the river ecosystem. \n\n\n\nBecause this trip has a strong community science and exploration component\, we ask that participants feel comfortable swimming and spending time in the water so we can focus on discovering mussels and learning about the river’s underwater world. \n\n\n\nIf you’ve ever wondered what lies beneath the surface of the Shenandoah\, this is your chance to find out. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited\, grab your snorkel gear (or use ours) and reserve your spot early. Come join your Riverkeeper for a day of paddling\, snorkeling\, and river discovery. \n\n\n\nWe can’t wait to see what we find down there. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTRIP DETAILS\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nArrival Location:Downriver Canoe Company884 Indian Hollow RoadBentonville\, VA 22610\n\n\n\n\n\nArrival & Check in Time: 10:00 am\n\n\n\nShuttle Departs to Put-In: 11:00 am\n\n\n\nEstimated End Time: 4:00 pm\n\n\n\nPaddle Level: Intermediate\n\n\n\n\nIncluded with each registration: \n\n\n\n\nRiverkeeper Leader\n\n\n\nRental canoe or kayak\n\n\n\nPaddle insurance\n\n\n\nPersonal flotation device for the day (with rental)\n\n\n\nSnorkel equipment\n\n\n\nShuttle Service (if applicable)\n\n\n\nSRK Swag Bag\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nPacked lunch\n\n\n\nReusable water bottle (please no single-use plastic bottles or glass) \n\n\n\nWear proper footwear.
