SUMMARY:Shenandoah Snorkeling Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Want to experience snorkeling on the Shenandoah?\n\n\n\nThis trip is just for you! This paddle is along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River with plenty of stops for snorkeling fun! \n\n\n\nWe are fortunate in that we will have Mike Selckmann\, Associate Director for Aquatic Habitats at the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB)\, on the trip with us to help explain the critical role freshwater mussels play in healthy ecosystems.  Each mussel can filter over 5 gallons of water per day to help improve water quality in our rivers and streams.  Historically\, mussels have played an integral role in doing just that on the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. But it is now rare to see healthy mussel populations on the Shenandoah.  Mercury contamination? Increased sediment loads? Warmer temperatures?  All good questions.  Join us and learn more! \n\n\n\nIn most of our RiverPalooza trips we strongly encourage first-timers to come out on the river\, regardless if they know how to swim.  On this trip\, because of the heavy community science component\, we ask that folks have some experience in the water so the focus can quickly transition to the exploration of mussels and their role in the Shenandaoh River ecosystem.   \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this chance to explore the stunning Shenandoah River and its fascinating wildlife with your Shenandoah Riverkeeper. We can’t wait to see you there! \n\n\n\n\nTrip Details & Registration

SUMMARY:Mallows Bay Ghost Fleet Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Join your Potomac Riverkeeper and partners for Get into your Sanctuary Weekend!\n\n\n\nMallows Bay is one of only 14 National Marine Sanctuaries\, the only sanctuary located in the Chesapeake Bay\, and we plan on celebrating that achievement with a one-of-a-kind\, guided interpretative paddle with under water archaeologist and expert Adam Wright. We will discuss the unique history\, features\, and ecology of Mallows Bay along with experts. If the sandy bluffs\, bald eagle roosts\, and rich wildlife aren’t enough\, this paddle also features one of the largest assemblages of historic shipwrecks in the western hemisphere. \n\n\n\nLocated just 30 miles south of Washington\, DC\, the historic Bay is situated along the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail and the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. SUMMARY:RiverPalooza: Shenandoah Snorkel\, Mussel & Paddle TRIP
DESCRIPTION:Our Shenandoah River snorkeling trip \, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service\, has always been a huge hit. This year we are going to zero in and focus on freshwater mussels while we snorkel the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll begin our journey at Hazard Mill and make our way downstream to the Bentonville boat ramp\, stopping along the way to explore likely mussel areas and possibly those locations where scientists from Virginia Tech’s Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Center and Virginia’s Department of Wildlife Resources have propagated mussels on this stretch of the South Fork.   With laminated fish ID cards provided by the U.S. Forest Service\, you’ll also be able to identify the various fish and other aquatic wildlife swimming by. We’re also thrilled to once again welcome Greg Trilling from Nature Forward\, who will set up a macroinvertebrate station to give us a closer look at some of the smaller river inhabitants and how they are able to provide a quick assessment of the overall health of the river in that area. \n\n\n\nThe trip fee includes the use of canoes/kayaks and snorkeling gear\, so all you need to bring is a beach towel\, lunch\, and plenty of water. And with low/clear river conditions expected at this time of year\, it’s the perfect opportunity for a day of safe and enjoyable paddling and snorkeling. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon’t miss this chance to explore the stunning Shenandoah River and its fascinating wildlife with your Shenandoah Riverkeeper. We can’t wait to see you there! \n\n\n\nLocation: Bentonville\, VA \n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrip Details\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nArrival Location:Down River Canoe884 Indian Hollow Rd.Bentonville\, VA 22610\n\n\n\n\n\nBegin Arrival & Check in: 9:00AM\n\n\n\nShuttle Departs to Put-In: 10:00AM\n\n\n\nEstimated Take-out time: 4:00pm\n\n\n\nPaddle Level: Intermediate (can handle more advanced whitewater strokes)\n\n\n\n\n\nBoat Options and Costs:Canoe: $75 (Includes registration for 2)Kayak: $60Tandem Kayak: $75BYOB: $35\n\n\n\n\nIncluded with each registration: \n\n\n\n\nRiverkeeper Leader\n\n\n\nrental canoe or kayak\n\n\n\nPaddle insurance\n\n\n\nPersonal flotation device for the day (with rental)\n\n\n\nSnorkel equipment\n\n\n\nShuttle Service (if applicable)\n\n\n\nRiverPalooza Tee\n\n\n\n\nNote:  Rentals are only available to adults or children 8 years and older who are accompanied by an adult and comfortable being face down in the water. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to Bring\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nPacked lunch\n\n\n\nReusable water bottle (please no plastic bottles or glass)\n\n\n\nWear proper footwear. SUMMARY:RiverPalooza: Shenandoah Birdwatching PADDLE
DESCRIPTION:Riverkeeper Boat Photo Credit: Sharon Fisher\n\n\n\nJoin us for a peaceful and picturesque journey down the South Fork of the Shenandoah River\, starting at Andy Guest Shenandoah River State Park and ending at Karo Landing (5+ miles). As we float downstream\, we’ll be joined by expert birders Heather McSharry and Mark Abdy\, Washington County Coordinators for the Maryland Ornithological Society’s Breeding Bird Atlas 3 Project. \n\n\n\nHeather and Mark will help us identify the various songbirds\, waterfowl\, and other feathered creatures we encounter on our journey. We’ve been lucky enough to spot numerous different bird species\, including Wood Ducks with ducklings\, Great Blue and Green Herons\, and even Bald Eagles. We’ll also have the opportunity to glide past a large Great Blue Heron rookery. Last year\, we ran the trip much later in the year due to drought conditions\, so we expect to find a few more migratory song birds in the mix this year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpace on this trip is limited\, so don’t wait until the last minute to reserve your spot – bring along your binoculars\, and we’ll provide walkie-talkies to help everyone stay in touch and share sightings. And if you have your own walkie-talkie\, be sure to bring it along as well. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this chance to enjoy a relaxing and informative float down the Shenandoah River with your Shenandoah Riverkeeper and expert birders Heather and Mark.
