A brief presentation will be followed by an audience Q&A. \n\n\n\n\n\nBiosolids\, the treated sewage sludge produced by wastewater treatment plants\, are applied to farmland across the country. Farmers use biosolids because they’re cheaper than traditional fertilizer and are marketed as safe and sustainable. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Potomac Riverkeeper Network (PRKN) and The District of Columbia Aquatics Club (DCAC) for DCAC’s annual open water swim event and fundraiser – the All Out Open Water Swim (formerly DCAC’s Swim for Life)! \n\n\n\nJoin us for this unique opportunity to swim in the Potomac River with a view of DC’s skyline and help fundraise for two fantastic organizations! This event will encourage individuals\, families\, and corporate teams to get physically active on or alongside the Potomac River — running\, walking\, or swimming — while raising awareness and funds to protect and restore the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. It will also support DCAC’s mission of promoting swimming for fitness\, health\, wellness\, and competition for the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. \n\n\n\nThe race will include both a 2.5K (one lap of course) and 5K (two laps of course) swim option. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: DCAC\n\n\n\n\n\nNot only is this event fun and active\, but you also raise funds for a good cause! Proceeds benefit PRKN’s work to stop pollution\, make drinking water safe\, protect healthy river habitats\, and enhance the use and enjoyment of the Potomac and Shenandoah watersheds. \n\n\n\nSwimmers either must be registered USMS members to participate\, or complete a USMS one event form and pay the associated fee ($20). \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: THIS SWIM IS ONLY OPEN TO PARTICIPANTS 18 AND OVER. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe understand there are ongoing concerns related to the January 19 Potomac Interceptor sewage spill into the Potomac River. Currently\, conditions are safe to conduct this swim event in National Harbor. SUMMARY:Oxon Cove Clean Up (Paddling OPTIONAL!) - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
DESCRIPTION:Join Potomac Riverkeeper Network on August 7th at Oxon Cove to help chip away at the decades of legacy trash that have washed up on the shore. \n\n\n\nA great amount of trash flows into Oxon Cove from the rest of the Potomac Watershed\, and one of our long term goals is to work to mitigate the flow of trash from Oxon Run into the Potomac. Come out\, bring a friend\, and spend spend a couple of hours cleaning up with us! \n\n\n\nAs part of our brand new Trash Free Boat Brigade\, we will have volunteers in their personal kayaks cleaning from on the water ahead of the land-based portion of the cleanup\, and others along the water in waders and heavy boots. For those on foot – it should be noted that there is about a mile hike down to the cove. Boots\, long pants\, water bottles\, sunscreen\, bug repellant\, and tetanus shots are strongly encouraged. Hip waders are a plus! \n\n\n\nWe will provide grabbers\, gloves\, hand sanitizer\, trash bags and information about the Potomac River. A larger PRKN boat will be at the cove with safety supplies and a hydration station. \n\n\n\nWe are happy to partner with Ward 8 Woods on this event\, and members of their team will be joining us the day of.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNote: All parties interested in being part of the kayaking component of the event – please reach out to Bill Szymanski\, captain of the Boat Brigade\, at billszy@gmail.com\, as logistics will differ slightly. Join Shenandoah Riverkeeper Mark Frondorf for an unforgettable paddle-and-snorkel adventure on the beautiful South Fork of the Shenandoah River. \n\n\n\nThis isn’t your typical float trip. We’ll paddle a scenic stretch of river with plenty of stops to slip into the water\, mask up\, and explore what’s happening beneath the surface. The Shenandoah is full of surprises\, and snorkeling reveals an entire hidden world of fish\, aquatic life\, and river-bottom habitats that most people never get to see. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdding to the adventure\, we’ll be joined by Mike Selckmann\, Associate Director for Aquatic Habitats at the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB). Mike will help us uncover the fascinating story of freshwater mussels—one of the river’s most important and most overlooked creatures.  \n\n\n\nThese remarkable animals are natural water filters\, with a single mussel capable of filtering 5-15 gallons of water every day. Historically\, healthy mussel beds helped keep the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers clean and thriving. Today\, however\, robust mussel populations on the Shenandoah are rare. But efforts are underway to turn that around. \n\n\n\nWhere did all the mussels go? Mercury contamination? Increased sediment?
