SUMMARY:Splash and Dash: 5K Walk/Run
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Potomac Riverkeeper Network (PRKN) for a brand new annual fundraising event\, Splash and Dash! This event will encourage individuals\, families\, and corporate teams to get physically active on or alongside the Potomac River — running\, walking\, or swimming — while raising awareness and funds to protect and restore the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. \n\n\n\nThe first event\, the 5K Walk/Run\, brings together community members\, outdoor enthusiasts\, and river supporters alike for a scenic walk/run along the Potomac River in beautiful National Harbor\, MD. Our route begins at the National Harbor plaza\, nearby the Capital Wheel\, and continues NE along the riverbank to Potomac River Waterfront Park on Rosilie Island – this route will loop to complete the 5K! \n\n\n\nNot only is this event fun and active\, but you also raise funds for a good cause! Proceeds benefit PRKN’s work to stop pollution\, make drinking water safe\, protect healthy river habitats\, and enhance the use and enjoyment of the Potomac and Shenandoah watersheds. \n\n\n\n\n5K Course Map\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Sponsors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSustainable Racing Partner

SUMMARY:Explorations with Your Riverkeeper: Shenandoah Birdwatching Paddle w/ Shenandoah Riverkeeper
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Shenandoah Riverkeeper Mark Frondorf for a relaxing and wildlife-filled float down one of the most scenic stretches of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. This 5+ mile journey begins at Andy Guest Shenandoah River State Park and drifts downstream to Karo Landing — and along the way the river becomes our front-row seat to some of the Valley’s best birding. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be joined by expert birders Mark Abdy and Heather McSharry\, Washington County Coordinators for the Maryland Ornithological Society’s Breeding Bird Atlas 3 Project. With their sharp eyes and deep knowledge\, you’ll learn to spot and identify the many feathered residents and migrants that call our river corridor home. Mark and Heather conduct birding trips as far away as Africa but graciously return every spring to share their knowledge with us. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\nExpect a lively cast of characters. In past floats\, we’ve encountered Wood Ducks and Mergansers shepherding ducklings\, Great Blue and Green Herons stalking the shallows\, and — if luck is with us — Bald Eagles soaring overhead. We’ll even glide past an active Great Blue Heron rookery. Sometimes they are still on the nests\, other years they will have already fledged. In the immortal words of Forrest Gump\, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’ And that is the case on our beautiful Shenandoah River. \n\n\n\n\nAnd because this trip falls during peak migration\, every bend in the river has the potential to reveal something new. Last year\, the big surprise was coming across a large family of otters scampering about the shoreline looking at us while we looked at them. Hard to tell who was more excited as everyone and everything was jabbering like crazy and looking in amazement at one another. \n\n\n\nBring your binoculars and your sense of adventure. We’ll have walkie-talkies for almost everyone so we can share sightings in real time (“Eagle river right just above the tree line!”)\, and if you have your own radio feel free to bring it along. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited and these trips tend to fill quickly\, so grab your spot early and join us for a memorable day of birds\, river\, and good company. \n\n\n\nCome float the river with your Shenandoah Riverkeeper and two of the region’s best birding guides — you never know what might fly into view around the next bend. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTRIP DETAILS\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nArrival Location:Front Royal Outdoors8567 Stonewall Jackson HighwayFront Royal\, VA 22630\n\n\n\n\n\nArrival & Check in Time: 9:00 am\n\n\n\nShuttle Departs to Put-In: 10:00 am\n\n\n\nEstimated End Time: 4:00 pm\n\n\n\nPaddle Level: Beginner\n\n\n\n\nIncluded with each registration: \n\n\n\n\nRiverkeeper Leader\n\n\n\nRental canoe or kayak\n\n\n\nPaddle insurance\n\n\n\nPersonal flotation device for the day (with rental)\n\n\n\nShuttle Service (if applicable)\n\n\n\nSRK Swag Bag\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nBinoculars\n\n\n\nPacked lunch\n\n\n\nReusable water bottle (please no single-use plastic bottles or glass)\n\n\n\nWear proper footwear. SUMMARY:Explorations with Your Riverkeeper: Shenandoah Snorkeling Paddle w/ Shenandoah Riverkeeper
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReady to see the Shenandoah River from a whole new perspective? Join Shenandoah Riverkeeper Mark Frondorf for an unforgettable paddle-and-snorkel adventure on the beautiful South Fork of the Shenandoah River. \n\n\n\nThis isn’t your typical float trip. We’ll paddle a scenic stretch of river with plenty of stops to slip into the water\, mask up\, and explore what’s happening beneath the surface. The Shenandoah is full of surprises\, and snorkeling reveals an entire hidden world of fish\, aquatic life\, and river-bottom habitats that most people never get to see. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdding to the adventure\, we’ll be joined by Mike Selckmann\, Associate Director for Aquatic Habitats at the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB). Mike will help us uncover the fascinating story of freshwater mussels—one of the river’s most important and most overlooked creatures. \n\n\n\nThese remarkable animals are natural water filters\, with a single mussel capable of filtering 5-15 gallons of water every day. Historically\, healthy mussel beds helped keep the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers clean and thriving. Today\, however\, robust mussel populations on the Shenandoah are rare. But efforts are underway to turn that around. \n\n\n\nWhere did all the mussels go? Mercury contamination? Increased sediment? Rising water temperatures? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMike Selckmann of ICPRB talks about the mighty mussel to snorkeling attendees while SRK Mark Frondorf listens intently in the background. Photo Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThose are exactly the kinds of questions we’ll explore together as we snorkel\, observe\, and learn about the challenges—and hope—for restoring this critical part of the river ecosystem. \n\n\n\nBecause this trip has a strong community science and exploration component\, we ask that participants feel comfortable swimming and spending time in the water so we can focus on discovering mussels and learning about the river’s underwater world. \n\n\n\nIf you’ve ever wondered what lies beneath the surface of the Shenandoah\, this is your chance to find out. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited\, grab your snorkel gear (or use ours) and reserve your spot early. Come join your Riverkeeper for a day of paddling\, snorkeling\, and river discovery. \n\n\n\nWe can’t wait to see what we find down there. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTRIP DETAILS\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nArrival Location:Downriver Canoe Company884 Indian Hollow RoadBentonville\, VA 22610\n\n\n\n\n\nArrival & Check in Time: 10:00 am\n\n\n\nShuttle Departs to Put-In: 11:00 am\n\n\n\nEstimated End Time: 4:00 pm\n\n\n\nPaddle Level: Intermediate\n\n\n\n\nIncluded with each registration: \n\n\n\n\nRiverkeeper Leader\n\n\n\nRental canoe or kayak\n\n\n\nPaddle insurance\n\n\n\nPersonal flotation device for the day (with rental)\n\n\n\nSnorkel equipment\n\n\n\nShuttle Service (if applicable)\n\n\n\nSRK Swag Bag\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nPacked lunch\n\n\n\nReusable water bottle (please no single-use plastic bottles or glass) \n\n\n\nWear proper footwear.
