SUMMARY:Mallows Bay Ghost Fleet Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Join your Potomac Riverkeeper and partners for Get into your Sanctuary Weekend!\n\n\n\nMallows Bay is one of only 14 National Marine Sanctuaries\, the only sanctuary located in the Chesapeake Bay\, and we plan on celebrating that achievement with a one-of-a-kind\, guided interpretative paddle with under water archaeologist and expert Adam Wright. We will discuss the unique history\, features\, and ecology of Mallows Bay along with experts. If the sandy bluffs\, bald eagle roosts\, and rich wildlife aren’t enough\, this paddle also features one of the largest assemblages of historic shipwrecks in the western hemisphere. \n\n\n\nLocated just 30 miles south of Washington\, DC\, the historic Bay is situated along the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail and the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. Join us in supporting Potomac Riverkeeper and our partners in their efforts to promote “fishable\, swimmable” waterways and preserve cultural resources like Mallows Bay for future generations to enjoy. \n\n\n\n\nTrip Details & Registration

SUMMARY:Shenandoah Snorkeling Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Want to experience snorkeling on the Shenandoah?\n\n\n\nThis trip is just for you! This paddle is along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River with plenty of stops for snorkeling fun! \n\n\n\nWe are fortunate in that we will have Mike Selckmann\, Associate Director for Aquatic Habitats at the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB)\, on the trip with us to help explain the critical role freshwater mussels play in healthy ecosystems.  Each mussel can filter over 5 gallons of water per day to help improve water quality in our rivers and streams.  Historically\, mussels have played an integral role in doing just that on the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. But it is now rare to see healthy mussel populations on the Shenandoah.  Mercury contamination? Increased sediment loads? Warmer temperatures?  All good questions.  Join us and learn more! \n\n\n\nIn most of our RiverPalooza trips we strongly encourage first-timers to come out on the river\, regardless if they know how to swim.  On this trip\, because of the heavy community science component\, we ask that folks have some experience in the water so the focus can quickly transition to the exploration of mussels and their role in the Shenandaoh River ecosystem.   \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this chance to explore the stunning Shenandoah River and its fascinating wildlife with your Shenandoah Riverkeeper. We can’t wait to see you there! \n\n\n\n\nTrip Details & Registration

SUMMARY:Shenandoah Bird Watching Paddle
DESCRIPTION:PRKN’s first Riverpalooza paddle of 2025! Join us for a float down the Shenandoah River with birding experts to guide you.\n\n\n\nJoin us for a peaceful and picturesque journey down the South Fork of the Shenandoah River\, starting at Andy Guest Shenandoah River State Park and ending at Karo Landing (5+ miles). As we float downstream\, we’ll be joined by expert birders Heather McSharry and Mark Abdy\, Washington County Coordinators for the Maryland Ornithological Society’s Breeding Bird Atlas 3 Project. \n\n\n\nHeather and Mark will help us identify the various songbirds\, waterfowl\, and other feathered creatures we encounter on our journey. We’ve been lucky enough to spot numerous different bird species\, including Wood Ducks with ducklings\, Great Blue and Green Herons\, and even Bald Eagles. We’ll also have the opportunity to glide past a large Great Blue Heron rookery. This popular event is during peak migration times and you are sure to see many feathered friends.  \n\n\n\nSpace on this trip is limited\, so don’t wait until the last minute to reserve your spot – bring along your binoculars\, and we’ll provide walkie-talkies to help everyone stay in touch and share sightings. And if you have your own walkie-talkie\, be sure to bring it along as well. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this chance to enjoy a relaxing and informative float down the Shenandoah River with your Shenandoah Riverkeeper and expert birders Heather and Mark. We can’t wait to see you there! \n\n\n\n\nTrip Details & Registration

SUMMARY:Water Wednesday: Sewage Spill of the Century
DESCRIPTION:Join Potomac Riverkeeper Network (PRKN) for an in-depth discussion on the catastrophic sewage spill that occurred on January 19 in Montgomery County\, Maryland. Potomac Riverkeeper Dean Naujoks will share the latest updates\, walk through PRKN’s rapid response efforts\, and explain what this spill means for the health of the Potomac River and downstream communities. \n\n\n\nMore than two weeks into this crisis\, the work is far from over. PRKN has been on the ground—collecting critical water quality data\, monitoring contamination levels\, and providing transparent\, science-based reporting to keep the public informed. The next phase is clear: demanding accountability and meaningful remediation to protect rivers that millions depend on for recreation\, wildlife habitat\, and drinking water. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWednesday\, February 11\, 202612 p.m. – 1 p.m. \n\n\n\nFREE Zoom Webinar \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:"Keep Winter Cold" Polar Bear Plunge
DESCRIPTION:EVENT UPDATE \n\n\n\nDue to the sewage spill that occurred on January 19th at Lock 10 on the Potomac River\, 18 miles upriver from the plunge site\, this event will now be a *splash* rather than a plunge! There will be tons of water balloons\, water blasters\, and ice buckets (using non-river water\, of course!) to participate. If you have a conflict on February 21\, we hope you will conduct a virtual plunge\, jumping into a water body near you or conducting an ice bucket challenge. In other words\, you can “plunge” anywhere and at a time of your choosing. \n\n\n\nOn February 21st\, our team will be plunging into icy cold waters with fellow climate activists to help raise vital funds for Potomac Riverkeeper Network and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network’s (CCAN) critical climate campaigns in 2026. \n\n\n\n\n\n10:00 – 11:00 AM \n\n\n\n\n\nArrive and check in at the Capital Canopy! We’ll have action tables\, music\, games\, face painting\, warm drinks\, and yummy snacks. \n\n\n\n\n\n11:00 – 11:40 AM \n\n\n\n\n\nPre-Plunge rally and costume contest. Sign up for the costume contest here! \n\n\n\n\n\n11:40 – 11:50 AM \n\n\n\n\n\nMarch to the Plunge point and get ready to plunge. \n\n\n\n\n\n11:50 AM – 12:10 PMPLUNGE TIME! \n\n\n\n\n\nAfter plunging\, you can change into warm clothes in our changing tents. \n\n\n\n\n\n12:15 – 2:30 PM \n\n\n\n\n\nHead back to the Capital Canopy for continued fun and celebration with your fellow Plungers! We’ll have pizza\, a hot cocoa bar\, a FREE beer from Denizens brewery (Plungers age 21+)\, games\, and music! \n\n\n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll join us or donate to support us!\n\n\n\n\nJOIN OUR TEAM OR MAKE A DONATION

SUMMARY:Explorations with Your Riverkeeper: Harpers Ferry Walking Tour w/ Shenandoah Riverkeeper
DESCRIPTION:Join Shenandoah Riverkeeper Mark Frondorf for SRK’s first-ever\, one-of-a-kind walking tour through historic Harpers Ferry — and Mark is bringing in serious firepower. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be joined by David Fox\, who served for 30 years as the interpretive ranger at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. David doesn’t just know the history — he brings it to life. From John Brown’s raid to African American history\, from the collision of natural and cultural forces to the powerful role the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers played in shaping our nation — this is storytelling at its best. \n\n\n\nAs we walk the cobblestone streets and narrow passageways\, you’ll see how two rivers converging at a single point helped alter the course of American history. \n\n\n\nAnd for those of us who may not be quite as spry as we once were navigating the river by canoe or kayak\, this is your chance to experience the river’s story with both feet firmly on terra firma — safely removed from White Horse Rapids (known in George Washington’s day as The Spout\, after he surveyed the Potomac following the French & Indian War). \n\n\n\nWe are intentionally limiting the size of this group out of respect for other visitors and the tight quarters of historic Harpers Ferry. Registration is capped\, and online sign-up is limited to two slots per person. \n\n\n\nIf you’ve ever wanted to understand the intersection of rivers\, rebellion\, resilience\, and revolution — this is your moment. \n\n\n\nHarpers Ferry is known for uneven steps and historic (read: unpredictable) terrain. Please wear sturdy\, comfortable footwear. Once you register\, we’ll send detailed information about parking and the required shuttle to the lower town. Definitely allow ample time for parking and taking the shuttle bus. \n\n\n\nSpots will go quickly — don’t wait. Come walk history with us! \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTRIP DETAILS\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nArrival Location:Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Visitor Center171 Shoreline DriveHarpers Ferry\, WV 25425\n\n\n\n\n\nArrival & Check in Time: 9:30 am\n\n\n\nShuttle Departs: Every 10-15 minutes\n\n\n\nEstimated Tour Duration: Approximately 90 minutes\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Price Per Person: $30\n\n\n\n\nIncluded with each registration: \n\n\n\n\nShenandoah Riverkeeper Guidance\n\n\n\nSRK Swag Bag\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nReusable water bottle (please no single-use plastic bottles or glass)\n\n\n\nWear proper footwear\n\n\n\nSunscreen\, hat and rain gear\n\n\n\n\nTo do in advance:\n\n\n\n\nPRKN Waiver – Participant Waiver\n\n\n\nPlease fill out and return by EMAIL to ashley@prknetwork.org\n\n\n\n\nNote:  We strongly recommend arriving at the parking lot no later than 9:30 AM. SUMMARY:PFAS\, Biosolids & Nomini Bay Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:When a biosolids company proposed expanding its permit to apply biosolids in Westmoreland county\, local residents and watermen raised concerns about what that could mean for their land\, water\, and livelihoods. Members of the Potomac Riverkeeper Network began hearing from the community\, and decided to take a closer look. \n\n\n\n\n\nBiosolids\, the treated sewage sludge produced by wastewater treatment plants\, are applied to farmland across Westmoreland County in large quantities. Farmers use biosolids because they’re cheaper than traditional fertilizer and are marketed as safe and sustainable. What farmers aren’t told is that biosolids can contain harmful levels of PFAS\, a “Forever Chemical” that is toxic to humans and can migrate from soil into crops\, rivers and well water. \n\n\n\nOver 33\,000 tons of biosolids have been applied to farmlands in Westmoreland in the last 7 years\, nearly half of which are sourced from Maryland\, where biosolids testing and regulation are more stringent. The quantity of biosolids in the Nomini Bay watershed were particularly concerning for the health of the farmers\, residents\, and the environment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThat’s why the Potomac Riverkeeper Network launched a community-driven effort to better understand and address PFAS contamination. \n\n\n\nWe believe that farmers and rural residents deserve to know what’s in the biosolids being spread on people’s farms. That’s why we’re offering free & confidential PFAS testing of farm soils and well water. \n\n\n\nJoin us on April 30th at 6pm at Coles Point Marina to schedule your free PFAS test and learn more. \n\n\n\n\nLOCATIONColes Point Marina307 Plantation Drive Hague\, VA 22469 \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Explorations with Your Riverkeeper: Shenandoah Birdwatching Paddle w/ Shenandoah Riverkeeper
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Shenandoah Riverkeeper Mark Frondorf for a relaxing and wildlife-filled float down one of the most scenic stretches of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. This 5+ mile journey begins at Andy Guest Shenandoah River State Park and drifts downstream to Karo Landing — and along the way the river becomes our front-row seat to some of the Valley’s best birding. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be joined by expert birders Mark Abdy and Heather McSharry\, Washington County Coordinators for the Maryland Ornithological Society’s Breeding Bird Atlas 3 Project. With their sharp eyes and deep knowledge\, you’ll learn to spot and identify the many feathered residents and migrants that call our river corridor home. Mark and Heather conduct birding trips as far away as Africa but graciously return every spring to share their knowledge with us. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\nExpect a lively cast of characters. In past floats\, we’ve encountered Wood Ducks and Mergansers shepherding ducklings\, Great Blue and Green Herons stalking the shallows\, and — if luck is with us — Bald Eagles soaring overhead. We’ll even glide past an active Great Blue Heron rookery. Sometimes they are still on the nests\, other years they will have already fledged. In the immortal words of Forrest Gump\, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’ And that is the case on our beautiful Shenandoah River. \n\n\n\n\nAnd because this trip falls during peak migration\, every bend in the river has the potential to reveal something new. Last year\, the big surprise was coming across a large family of otters scampering about the shoreline looking at us while we looked at them. Hard to tell who was more excited as everyone and everything was jabbering like crazy and looking in amazement at one another. \n\n\n\nBring your binoculars and your sense of adventure. We’ll have walkie-talkies for almost everyone so we can share sightings in real time (“Eagle river right just above the tree line!”)\, and if you have your own radio feel free to bring it along. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited and these trips tend to fill quickly\, so grab your spot early and join us for a memorable day of birds\, river\, and good company. \n\n\n\nCome float the river with your Shenandoah Riverkeeper and two of the region’s best birding guides — you never know what might fly into view around the next bend. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTRIP DETAILS\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nArrival Location:Front Royal Outdoors8567 Stonewall Jackson HighwayFront Royal\, VA 22630\n\n\n\n\n\nArrival & Check in Time: 9:00 am\n\n\n\nShuttle Departs to Put-In: 10:00 am\n\n\n\nEstimated End Time: 4:00 pm\n\n\n\nPaddle Level: Beginner\n\n\n\n\nIncluded with each registration: \n\n\n\n\nRiverkeeper Leader\n\n\n\nRental canoe or kayak\n\n\n\nPaddle insurance\n\n\n\nPersonal flotation device for the day (with rental)\n\n\n\nShuttle Service (if applicable)\n\n\n\nSRK Swag Bag\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nBinoculars\n\n\n\nPacked lunch\n\n\n\nReusable water bottle (please no single-use plastic bottles or glass)\n\n\n\nWear proper footwear. SUMMARY:Explorations with Your Riverkeeper: Shenandoah Snorkeling Paddle w/ Shenandoah Riverkeeper
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReady to see the Shenandoah River from a whole new perspective? Join Shenandoah Riverkeeper Mark Frondorf for an unforgettable paddle-and-snorkel adventure on the beautiful South Fork of the Shenandoah River. \n\n\n\nThis isn’t your typical float trip. We’ll paddle a scenic stretch of river with plenty of stops to slip into the water\, mask up\, and explore what’s happening beneath the surface. The Shenandoah is full of surprises\, and snorkeling reveals an entire hidden world of fish\, aquatic life\, and river-bottom habitats that most people never get to see. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdding to the adventure\, we’ll be joined by Mike Selckmann\, Associate Director for Aquatic Habitats at the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB). Mike will help us uncover the fascinating story of freshwater mussels—one of the river’s most important and most overlooked creatures. \n\n\n\nThese remarkable animals are natural water filters\, with a single mussel capable of filtering 5-15 gallons of water every day. Historically\, healthy mussel beds helped keep the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers clean and thriving. Today\, however\, robust mussel populations on the Shenandoah are rare. But efforts are underway to turn that around. \n\n\n\nWhere did all the mussels go? Mercury contamination? Increased sediment? Rising water temperatures? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMike Selckmann of ICPRB talks about the mighty mussel to snorkeling attendees while SRK Mark Frondorf listens intently in the background. Photo Credit: Alan Lehman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThose are exactly the kinds of questions we’ll explore together as we snorkel\, observe\, and learn about the challenges—and hope—for restoring this critical part of the river ecosystem. \n\n\n\nBecause this trip has a strong community science and exploration component\, we ask that participants feel comfortable swimming and spending time in the water so we can focus on discovering mussels and learning about the river’s underwater world. \n\n\n\nIf you’ve ever wondered what lies beneath the surface of the Shenandoah\, this is your chance to find out. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited\, grab your snorkel gear (or use ours) and reserve your spot early. Come join your Riverkeeper for a day of paddling\, snorkeling\, and river discovery. \n\n\n\nWe can’t wait to see what we find down there. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTRIP DETAILS\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nArrival Location:Downriver Canoe Company884 Indian Hollow RoadBentonville\, VA 22610\n\n\n\n\n\nArrival & Check in Time: 10:00 am\n\n\n\nShuttle Departs to Put-In: 11:00 am\n\n\n\nEstimated End Time: 4:00 pm\n\n\n\nPaddle Level: Intermediate\n\n\n\n\nIncluded with each registration: \n\n\n\n\nRiverkeeper Leader\n\n\n\nRental canoe or kayak\n\n\n\nPaddle insurance\n\n\n\nPersonal flotation device for the day (with rental)\n\n\n\nSnorkel equipment\n\n\n\nShuttle Service (if applicable)\n\n\n\nSRK Swag Bag\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nPacked lunch\n\n\n\nReusable water bottle (please no single-use plastic bottles or glass) \n\n\n\nWear proper footwear.
